Maca is a root-crop plant that is native to Peru and has been cultivated there for centuries. The plant is not widely grown, as it does not flourish below around 4000 metres, and prefers cold climates and poor soils.

The plant was traditionally grown as a crop for general and ceremonial purposes, and for trading with crops produced by communities living at lower altitudes. It produces fleshy tubers that come in a range of shapes, sizes, colours and flavours depending on the strain of plant; white maca roots are prized for their sweetness, whilst black maca roots have a more bitter flavour, and are used for their energy enhancing properties.

The roots can either be baked and eaten straight away, or can be boiled and mashed to form a paste which can be mixed with milk or grains of cereal, then dried and ground to form a flour.

Legend has it that Inca warriors would consume large amounts of (especially black) maca roots before going into battle, as this helped them to be stronger and more aggressive fighters. Similar legends tell of vanquished enemies blaming this enthusiastic maca-eating for the even more enthusiastic ravishing of their womenfolk by victorious Inca warriors.

Because of legends such as these, maca extract has found its way into a wealth of supplements designed to promote (especially male) vitality and vigour, and indeed the growing of maca to meet the demands of the supplements industry now outstrips that for domestic consumption. This rise in popularity has led to a number of studies being carried out into the effects of maca, and the differences between the various strains and the active compounds that they produce.

A few small clinical trials have shown that consuming maca can help to improve semen quality and boost libido, although no studies have been carried out using subjects with sexual dysfunction or fertility problems. Whilst maca itself has no hormonal effect, it is thought that the unique makeup and nutritional content of the plant have a normalising effect upon hormone regulation. Experiments on rats and mice have also shown that maca consumption increased their levels of mating behaviour.

So it seems that while maca is unlikely to have a dramatic effect upon individuals with fertility problems, its use in supplements that claim to increase sperm volume and improve sperm health is quite justified.
